Loving the dead.

So, it's not like I've become obsessive about it, but I may be in danger of burning out my interest in HeroClix. The first evidence was made apparent to me a month ago when an interest was rekindled in something else that hadn't really grabbed my attention much previously. Then, the notion was compounded when I spent more in one week to acquire massive quantities of that something than I had on HC since the beginning of the year. So, next week when the third and final auction I won arrives I will have an estimated total of 600 new Mage Knight figures. The dead are cheap.

It was like Christmas morning, twice this week, when the receptionist lady at work called me at my desk so that I could come out to the lobby to pick up the "large, heavy box with [my] name on it." Closet geeks from all over my department came by for the distraction, and posed numerous questions about a game that I have played less than a handful of times myself. That same game was murdered last fall by its own creator. Now, after less than a year, players who were once dedicated commanders have been abandoning their armies on the secondary market. It's just in time for someone like me, with little more than a passing interest in gaming yet too few scruples to not be bearish, to swoop in and consume the carrion plastic. Unfortunately, I got a little carried away, and have succeded also in depleting my toy budget for the next two months.

In any event, I'm certain I will enjoy the figures for a long time to come, regardless of whether or not I ever play the game, which leans drastically towards not. MK's world and back story are richly imagined, and some of those stories had even been published. There is a plethora of well-developed characters, with plots that intertwined over the product's five-year-run - some of them even becoming famous to a degree or two beyond household obscurity. They managed to take it another step further, and there is a Mage Knight video game on the horizon that had been announced even before its demise as a collectable miniatures, table top strategy game. Somehow, though, I don't think it will hold all of the same appeal for all of the same fans. These are, after all, toys.

Necrophilism - it ain't just about bangin' dead chicks anymore!

In my case, it has more to do with being a cheap bastard. Admission is the first step to recovery, though. And last night I actually looked myself in the eye, in the mirror, and said, "Imbalance, you are a cheap bastard. You must reform." Then I went and played with my new cheap toys for a while. They're the neatest!
